May Legislative Review: City Council Referrals to Committee

At the May 22nd City Council meeting, over 100 ordinances were referred to the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety. The vast majority were routine sign ordinances such as stop signs, loading zones, residential permit parking, and disabled parking signs.
Some council members introduced legislation focused on larger matters related to pedestrian and traffic safety in Chicago, as opposed to specific wards.

Lamont Robinson (4) , this ordinance seeks an amendment of Municipal Code Section 9-64-050 (Parking Regulations) establishing priority reapplication process for restricted parking space applicants. More specifically, if a resident’s application for Disabled Parking Signs is denied based on the location of the proposed parking space or the availability of alternative off-street parking, the Department of Finance will notify the resident when a space becomes available and the resident’s new application will be given priority based on the date of their original denied application.

Mike Rodriguez (22)–seeks an amendment of Municipal Code Chapter 9-72 (Size and Weight Limits) by adding new Sections 9-72-120 and 9-72-130 establishing a pilot program in specified areas for use of automated enforcement systems to record covered offenses and violations. The goal of this amendment is to reduce violations by oversized vehicles and to protect the health and safety of Chicago residents.

Brendan Reilly (42), this ordinance seeks an amendment of Municipal Code Section 9-108-010 (Smart Streets Pilot Program) by modifying referenced sections under definition of "covered offense" for automated parking enforcement system pilot program. If passed, this ordinance would eliminate subsection (c) of Section 9-64-190 Parking meter zones–Regulations.
